Improving AFIS Coverage
— Jim Wheaton
If your flights often take you into VHF AFIS reception-less territory, you might consider a satellite AFIS add-on transmitter/receiver. Satellite AFIS can be connected through an existing DMU or satellite telephone system. Using these systems, satellite AFIS uses costeffective packet data and the Aero C satellite system to deliver constant AFIS communication. In oceanic regions and on the ground at airports far from VHF AFIS stations, satellite AFIS is a reliable means of sending messages, flight plans and weather anywhere around the globe.
For more information on this system, please contact Dennis DeCook at 800.525.2376.
Chapter Five Requirement
— Jim Overheul
Chapter five section 05-02-00 (manufacturer time between overhaul/ scrap) for GIIs and D.C. model GIIIs requires the operator to check the protective function of the appropriate voltage regulator for proper operation at times of alternator or generator replacement. Since there are no maintenance manual procedures to check this with these units installed on the aircraft, they require removal for bench check.
For more information, contact Jim Overheul at 800.525.2376.

GII Through GIV Flap Repair
— Jim Overheul
If your flap trailing edge has been identified with delamination during the 24 month or 4000 landing inspection, be aware that there are standard repairs for flap trailing edges that cut out the bad section of the aluminum honeycomb and replace it with a sheet metal repair.
This article is two-fold; first you may be able to do a localized repair vs. a trailing edge replacement. Second, if your flap has been repaired using this method the (suspected) delamination may not apply because the honeycomb has been removed and the bond test may not be required for the repaired area. So before you possibly have unnecessary costly repairs done, properly identify all suspected delamination. For more information on help identifying these areas call Jim Overheul.
Do You Know the Steps to RVSM Compliance?
— Dennis DeCook
With the mandate deadline for DRVSM only months away, it is important to know all of the steps for completing RVSM compliance. The FAA application and approval process and the monitoring and training required for RVSM may add a significant amount of time to the process of RVSM certification for your aircraft.
Whether you plan to obtain RVSM through an ASC or a STC, be sure that you plan in advance and allow appropriate time for the application, monitoring, training and approval process.
For more information about ALL of the steps to RVSM and to obtain sample timelines, please contact Dennis DeCook at 800.525.2376.
