Over time the performance of the centering torsion spring in the nose wheel steering system degrades. It is not unusual for this gradual effect to go unnoticed.
This centering torsion spring is located in the rear cover of the steering capstan assembly. Its replacement is on condition, meaning there is no Chapter 5 replacement schedule. However it is easily installed when the nose gear steering unit is removed during the nose gear strut assembly corrosion prevention procedure.
The current price of the spring is less than $80; a very small price to pay for increased performance benefit.
Duncan Aviation techs have discovered other items that can have an adverse effect on the nose steering system performance.
- Excessive play in the universal shaft hardware at the steering wheel/ tiller bar assembly and/or the steering control drive sector
- Incorrect cable tension
- Excessive wear on the nose steering feedback cam and/or feedback arm
- Improper shimming at the steering control valve support and the steering control support bracket and steering control support bracket and steering damper flange
