PW545A And PW545B Engine Troubleshooting
— Ken Kuchenreuther
I know that if all Citation 560XL/XLS owners, operators and technicians read this article, many of you will save money and your valuable time down the road by following these troubleshooting tips.
If, after starting your engines, you are in computer mode and you have no detents on the right engine throttle, then the problem may be the NZ021. If, after starting your engines, you are in computer mode and your engines don’t idle the same, then the problem may be NZ020 or NZ021. If, after starting your engines, you are in computer mode and while pushing both throttles ahead around flight idle the right engine goes up to take off for the day, then the problem may be NZ021 EEC interface board. If, after starting your engines, you are in computer mode and anything similar to these examples happens (and you are staying in computer mode), troubleshoot the EEC interface boards and systems first before doing anything with the engines. The left, NZ020, and right, NZ021 EEC interface boards are the same part number. We recently solved a problem like this for a customer by replacing an EEC board.
The EEC interface boards are located in the power junction box of the aircraft. Make sure to follow all the electronic static precautions when handling these boards.
PW535A and PW535B Engines: Inspecting Retaining Bolts
— Ken Kuchenreuther
Pratt & Whitney recently came out with a revision (R1) to SB 30335 that previously pertained to the PW545 series engines only. The revision adds the PW535A and PW535B engines. When new, the earlier serial numbers (DA0238 and earlier) PW535A engines came out with studs and nuts holding the gas generator case to the intermediate case. If for some reason you had bolts put in per SB30256, or your engine serial number is between DC0239 and DC0355 and your engine was built with bolts in it from new, then it is recommended SB 30335R1 (inspection of the bolts securing the gas generator case to the intermediate case) be complied with. If you have a PW535B engine that is pre- and including serial number DE0045, it is recommended you comply with SB30335R1. The good news is if you haven’t had a hot section done yet, you can comply with the bulletin at hot section inspection. If you have had an HSI already, you can do the inspection per SB30335R1 at TTSN 3600 hours or within 500 flight hours, whichever comes later. A borescope inspection can be accomplished by removing the bleed valve assembly.
As with the PW545 series, Pratt & Whitney is offering parts and labor support per Commercial Support Program #1002883. If you have questions about this, or any issue in this publication, please contact me by phone at 269.969.8486.
