TFE731 Engine Preservation
In a previous edition of the TFE731 Duncan Intelligence, we talked about low utilization for engines being operated six months or less. Honeywell also has specific low-utilization requirements for engines experiencing more than six months of low utilization. The LMM stipulates the fuel system is to be preserved according to those procedures. An oil preservative is added to the fuel inlet connection on the fuel pump while the engine is motored. Warning tags need to be assigned to the engine stating the fuel system is preserved and a log book entry made to this effect. The engine is required to be motored every four weeks along with a log book entry stating this was accomplished. To prevent your engine from being added to the Damaged Engine List, follow the Honeywell LMM procedures for your engine model.
Inspection Intervals Increased
Honeywell has revised the LMM to allow operators of the TFE731-20/40/60 engines to increase MPI interval from 2500 hours to 3000 hours and increase the CZI interval from 5000 to 6000 hours if certain Service Bulletins have been performed. See chapter 5-20-00 Scheduled Maintenance Checks, Table 801, page 805, revision date May 15/07 for details.
Service Bulletin 72-5194 was released on 4/30/08 and applies to the TFE731-40/60 engine models. This SB will improve the HP/LP turbine sections durability by installing improved HPT shrouds & case, HPT nozzle segments, ITT harness and First Stage LPT shroud segments, just to name a few. Additionally, because the transitions duct and First Stage Nozzle Assembly (A5 Nozzle) will need to be sent to Honeywell to be reworked, compliance of this SB will require approximately seven additional working days. When planning an MPI and SB 72-5194 work, remember to plan for those additional days of downtime.
Honeywell has developed a cost savings program for any operator that complies with SB 72-5194 at their next MPI. If you elect NOT to comply with this SB at your next MPI, you will not be eligible for the cost savings at future MPI intervals.
TFE731 Oil Change Intervals
Honeywell has issued several temporary revisions that have increased the oil change time intervals on classic engine models. The required 600 hours has been increased to 1200-1300 hours. Reference temporary revision 72-164 for the TFE731-2 and temporary revision 72-178 for the TFE731-3 engines that are post service bulletins 72-3596 or 72-3662. Temporary revision 72-148 addresses the TFE731-4 and 72-178 for the TFE731-5 engine post service bulletins 72-3597 or 72-3662.
The TFE731-20/40/50/60 oil change interval remains at 1000-1300 hours.
New TFE731 Tech Rep
